ACTIVITY 1 Begin by doing this crossword to review last week’s classes on Shakespeare and the beginning of Macbeth:

ACTIVITY 2 Now complete this summary of Act 1 Scene 3:

ACTIVITY 3 Next answer these questions on Act 1 Scene 3 in your workbook:

a) What impression do the witches make on you (lines 1-35)? Choose some adjectives to describe their attitude and way of speaking.

b) Complete the first line Macbeth speaks in the play:

‘So __________ and ____________ a day I have not seen’. What do these words remind you of? Is this significant?

c) How would you describe Macbeth’s reaction to the witches’ prophecies?

d) Look at lines 119-126. Note some words which suggest Banquo doesn’t trust the witches.

e) The stage direction [Aside] is used twice (in line 115 and line 126), each time in relation to Macbeth. What is the significance of this?

f) What impressions have Macbeth and Banquo made on you in this scene?

a) How would you describe the way the characters speak to each other in this scene? Try to find 2 or 3 adjectives.

b) Think about how Duncan was presented in Scene 2. Has your impression of him changed?

c) Look at lines 48-53. What can you say about the language, rhyme and rhythm in this section compared to the rest of the scene? What effect does this have?

d) How is Macbeth’s ambition presented in this scene? Is it strength or a weakness?
